Madonna's debut single "Everybody" marked the beginning of her storied music career. Written and recorded by Madonna and produced by DJ Mark Kamins, the song originated in 1982 when she was living in New York City with then-boyfriend Stephen Bray. Together, they created a demo tape featuring four dance tracks, one of which was "Everybody." Lacking a record deal, Madonna hustled her way into the city’s club scene, persuading DJs to play her demo. At Danceteria, Kamins played "Everybody" to an enthusiastic crowd, prompting him to bring it to Sire Records. Seymour Stein, the label’s president, was impressed and signed Madonna to a deal for two twelve-inch singles.
"Everybody" was recorded in just three days at Blank Tape Recording Studios and released on October 6, 1982. Blending post-disco, electro, and R&B, the track encourages listeners to dance and express themselves freely. Critics praised its infectious energy, and it climbed to number three on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart. Because the single’s cover did not show Madonna's face, some initially assumed she was Black. That misconception was cleared up by the Ed Steinberg–directed video, which featured Madonna dancing at Paradise Garage. The song gained momentum with live performances in 1982 and 1983 and was later featured on multiple concert tours, most recently the 2023–2024 Celebration Tour.
